The insurance industry is somewhat deprived of media attention in the context of new technologies and innovations. The key "hype" revolved around fintech projects in the areas of online banking, robo-advising, payment systems and p2p lending. Against this background, new technologies in insurance are significantly deprived of the attention of the specialized media of Ukraine.
A review of the most promising technologies of the insurance market was conducted for us by the CEO of KRONA Insurance Company Yulia Dobrenkova.
Old and new insurance technologies
First of all, I would like to note that the insurance industry is one of the most "age-old" in the financial services market. Given the rather high degree of "inertia of thinking", not all representatives of the insurance industry are able to take risks and invest in fundamentally new IT technologies. According to the analytical company CB Insights, in the period from 2011 to 2016, venture investors made investment projects in InsurTech (insurance technologies) worth over 16 billion US dollars. More than ¾ of the total investment amount fell on 2014-2016. According to the latest data, the volume of investments in innovative technologies in the insurance sector in 2017 may exceed 8 billion US dollars.
Investment-promising technologies in insurance
If we talk about the most promising and attractive technologies from the point of view of market prospects, the following can be distinguished:
- P2P insurance - to put it simply, this is an opportunity for those clients who want to get insured, to unite into similar groups according to a number of characteristics and form a common insurance fund from which payments will be made in the event of insured events. P2P insurance platforms earn on the commission they charge for their services. The attractiveness of the service for the client is ensured by the ability to return part of the funds intended for payments for insurance claims. The fewer insurance claims occur, the more money the client can return to the P2P service (up to 80% of the cost of the insurance policy).
- "Activated on demand" insurance allows you to activate insurance when you need it, you pay only for the period of active insurance policy. Such a service allows you to activate accident insurance exactly when you go on a tourist trip, and CASCO during the period of active use of the car.
- Insurance telematics is a promising insurance technology that allows you to remotely analyze the personal data of the insured person. Allows you to analyze the driving style during car insurance or the health indicators of a client who has purchased a health insurance service. Telematics system providers confirm the effectiveness of remote monitoring technology by stating that the probability of an accident between “bad” and “good” drivers can differ by 6 times or more. Thanks to the implementation of remote monitoring using telematics, “good” drivers can avoid paying for others and save on their insurance policy. Given that traditional insurance companies are based on the analysis of insurance experience, color and make of the car, the analysis of driving style and accident potential seems to be a more reliable method than the above-mentioned methods of “divination on coffee grounds”.
- Aggregators of insurance services and offers - a Western example of such a service can be considered the moneysupermarket website, which allows not only to find the most profitable insurance policy, but also to receive special discounts and promotional offers from leading insurance companies.
