When going to another country for the first time by car, the driver is faced with the need to buy a Green Card. Having studied the prices, some travelers begin to think that it is too expensive. In fact, everything depends on a number of nuances, including the term of insurance. And if you take into account the possibilities of saving on such a trip (for example, on flights, travel, sometimes on accommodation), the costs seem not at all significant. We tell you how to choose the term of the policy for yourself and quickly apply for it.

Why get a Green Card and what it is

The international program insures the liability of motorists who travel outside their country. So that during trips / business trips or other trips they do not have problems with compensation in the event of an accident. That is, this document has the same principle of operation as the «Autocivilka». But the difference is that the OSCPV is valid only on the territory of Ukraine, and the Green Card is valid outside the country.

Without a Green Card, transport simply will not be allowed at the border: be it a moped, a passenger car or a truck. Only cyclists do not need to insure their liability.

The system of this insurance operates in over 40 countries, including all of Europe, Ukraine, Belarus, and so on. All countries that border ours are in this system, which means that you will not be able to leave the country without a Green Card.

You can take out a policy before the trip or already at the border. To do this quickly, study the information and prepare the necessary documents.

How to quickly get a Green Card

Collect the following documents:

  • Passport of the vehicle owner.
  • Identification code.
  • Driver's license.
  • Vehicle registration certificate.

Also needed: money to purchase a policy and information about what insurance you want to purchase. It may differ in the period of validity, as well as the list of countries covered by the purchased insurance. Pay special attention to this so as not to overpay. For example, if you just need to go to Belarus - you should not spend money on insurance that is valid throughout Europe. But do not try to save money and issue a cheap document: if you go further from this country, for example, to Lithuania - the insurance will no longer be valid there. And in the event of a road accident, the company will not compensate for the damage.

When all the information is there, and the documents and their copies are collected - look at the list of insurance companies on the website of the Motor Transport Insurance Bureau of Ukraine. Only those companies that are on this list - have the right to issue a travel policy. It will not be difficult to choose. Contact one of the companies, submit documents and specify the details. Pay for the document and in 5 minutes it will be in your hands. And if you ordered delivery via the Internet - it will be delivered within one or two days.

Choose: what are the terms of validity of the Green Card

The key parameter on which the cost of the Green Card depends - is the term for which you insure your liability. The minimum period for which you can make a document - is 15 days (or more precisely, days).

The longest term of its validity - 1 year. So if insurance is needed constantly - it should be renewed once a year.

There are intermediate periods between these terms: you can buy a Green Card for 1, 2 or 3 months and so on up to 6 months (six months).

Frequently asked questions: for what period should I issue the document

«I plan to travel to another country once every few months. Which policy should I buy?»

A policy for 15 days and a policy for 1 year differ significantly in price. If in the case of simple travel medical insurance — registration for a year is more profitable, then with a document for a car everything is not so clear.

For example, you calculated the price of insurance for your vehicle and the amount for 15 days turned out to be 700 hryvnias. And for a year it already costs 5 thousand hryvnias. At the same time, you plan to travel for 2 weeks 3 times a year. Calculate the cost of three purchased Green Cards for 700 hryvnias each - this will be 2 thousand 100 hryvnias, which is cheaper than an annual document.

Also, if you buy insurance for 1 month - it will cost 1 thousand hryvnias and insurance for 3 trips, respectively, will cost 3 thousand hryvnias. This is still cheaper than issuing a document for a year.

So, a permanent Green Card will be useful only to those drivers who are very often in another country, but at the same time stay there for a long time.

«I'm only going for 7 days, can I buy a policy for this period only?»

The minimum period of validity of the policy is 15 days. This document is issued even if you need to cross the border of another country for 1 or 2 days. You can’t buy insurance for just a week, you will have to simply issue the cheapest one, that is, for 15 days.

Before crossing the border - check whether your policy has entered into force. To do this, go to the MTIBU website and enter the policy number or car registration number. Try to check this in advance - if you encounter scammers, there will be time to reissue the policy. It is better to find out about a fake at home than when an accident has already occurred, when it turns out that compensation for damages is entirely your responsibility.
