The Thai Ministry of Tourism has proposed requiring all tourists entering the country to have health insurance, the Bangkok Post newspaper reported, citing a source.
The project was proposed, among other things, as a plan to develop Thailand as a destination for medical and wellness tourism. It will be considered by the country's National Tourism Policy Commission.
At the same time, the rules for obtaining insurance and other details are planned to be worked out by the National Insurance Commission, the publication writes.
According to the newspaper, the new requirement should not become a barrier to inbound tourism. Therefore, Thailand is looking for a solution so that foreign travelers can enter the country even if they have not purchased insurance in advance. In particular, at passport control at international airports and checkpoints on the country's borders, automatic insurance policy registration machines can be installed, where tourists can purchase the necessary document.
Earlier, the country's Ministry of Tourism had already proposed introducing mandatory medical insurance for foreign tourists. Thai hospitals are often left with unpaid bills for the treatment of foreigners because the victims do not have the funds to pay for medical services, the publication writes.
According to the executive director of ERV, Yulia Alcheeva, it is not enough to introduce such a norm, it will still be necessary to monitor its implementation. She recalled that in the Schengen countries, control is carried out at the stage of submitting visa documents.
"This idea will not be of the future, but it is a reminder to individual tourists that they need to be insured. Many of them approach planning their trips irresponsibly. Although, there are others – "In our country, according to the results of this winter, Thailand ranks first among those who are insured independently," - said Yu. Alcheeva to the "Interfax-Tourism" portal.
According to the expert, nothing will change for tour operator clients, since insurance is already included in the tour package. According to Federal Law No. 155, they can be refused only by writing a written statement.
"The idea of issuing policies upon arrival through machines is similar to another extortion - foreign tourists will not be able to obtain compensation from the local insurance company for bills they paid independently, and it will also be difficult to organize transportation to their homeland," - she emphasized.
Tourist traffic to Thailand from January to March reached 9.19 million, which is 1.7% more than last year's result.
