For car insurance, depending on the purpose, there are different types of insurance. CTPV is mandatory, it insures your liability in the event of an accident to the injured party. CASCO - helps cover the car owner's repairs in the event of an accident. And the Green Card - like CTPV, protects your liability, but in other countries. What insurance would not be needed, the same question worries: how to protect yourself from buying a fake policy?

The danger is not only that the driver will spend money on a fake and will have to buy insurance again. And, not even that he will pay a fine when the police check the documents. The main danger is to find out that the insurance is not real, when an insured event occurs. Then unforeseen expenses will really be a problem for the driver.

Should we be wary of electronic documents?

The misconception that electronic insurance is sold more often than paper insurance is due to the fact that in general, in other areas you can often meet online scammers. In fact, drivers who buy paper policies are more likely to suffer from fake insurance. And owners of electronic documents face this problem much less often.

Take the example of the OSCPV - its authenticity can be checked via the Internet. So it turns out that customers who are used to shopping via a smartphone can protect themselves. But, regardless of whether you buy paper insurance or via the Internet - you need to learn to distinguish a fake from the original. We will tell you about each separately:

  • MTPL insurance - how not to buy a fake
  • Green Card policy - how to distinguish the original from a fake
  • CASCO insurance, how not to buy a fake

MTPL insurance - how not to buy a fake

The main "client" of scammers is the one who is in a hurry to get insurance as cheaply and quickly as possible. To choose the best price, drivers go to dubious agencies or mobile points of sale for the document.

There are two types of fakes most often: a fake form or a real one, but the policy issued is invalid. On the spot, without special tools, it is difficult to distinguish the original document from a fake. But here's what you should pay attention to:

  • Check the insurance company in the database of the Motor Transport Insurance Bureau of Ukraine. You can do this on the official website of the MTIBU.
  • Inspect the paper form to see if it has any visual differences from the document you bought earlier or saw from other drivers.
  • Also, in the MTIBU database you can check if your form is on the list of lost/written off.
  • Look at the correct number of digits in the policy number and get a document confirming the insurance payment. Without this document, the policy is invalid.

With an electronic policy, it is more difficult to get caught by scammers, since they do not issue a paper document - which is usually forged. You can immediately check this policy and the insurance company through the MTIBU database. If the driver is shown information from another site, you can immediately understand that they are scammers and you need to apply for a policy to another company.

Green Card Policy - How to Distinguish an Original from a Fake

Becoming a participant, or even worse, the culprit of an accident is an unpleasant situation, in general. But if it happened in another country, the stress level is much higher. The same applies to a fake Green Card document. No one wants to end up in another country with fake insurance and have to compensate for the damage on their own. What you should pay attention to when buying a Green Card:

  • There are only 10 insurance companies in Ukraine that have the right to issue Green Cards to drivers. All of these companies are listed in the MTIBU database and can be found/checked via the Internet at any time. If there is no company among the 10 that offers you their services, then they are scammers.
  • Check the authenticity of the document with a special ultraviolet lamp. Yes, you probably don’t have such a device, but the border guards do. When you pass through the control, ask them to check the authenticity of the Green Card. It is better to know about a fake in advance and buy a new one than to discover the problem during a possible accident.
  • Find out in advance the approximate cost of a policy for your car for a certain period. This amount can be calculated on the website of the Motor Transport Bureau. If the insurance that you are offered is much more expensive or much cheaper, this is a reason for suspicion.
  • Inspect the paper policy. There should be no stamps on it, most companies simply fill it out by hand. The document consists of four parts, the third of which you give to the insurance company. But before you give the page, compare it with the ones that you have left. The information on all parts must match completely.

Complete comprehensive insurance, how not to buy a fake

Complete comprehensive insurance, unlike the MTPL and the Green Card, is not mandatory for the car owner. This policy is taken out at one's own request to cover the costs of repairing one's vehicle. Not only in the event of a possible accident, but also in other cases: car theft, its breakage by a third party, fire. Accidents, such as a tree falling on the roof, hail, other unforeseen situations. What does a comprehensive comprehensive insurance document look like? There is no single sample and they are all different. A few recommendations that will help you not to buy a fake:

  • A reliable option, again, is to go to the MTIBU website. There you can find insurance companies that are part of the bureau. And among them, choose the appropriate option. Since only these companies have the right to issue insurance policies.
  • When drawing up the contract, write down the details of the agent representing the company (the number of his car, information from the passport). If the agent came to you, and not you to the office, call the official number of the company and find out if they have such an employee.
  • Make sure that all the information is correct: about the owner of the car and who assumes responsibility for payments. About all the characteristics of the car; the persons who will drive the car; the validity period of the document. Review the list of insured events to see if it meets your expectations. Also, check the insured amount indicated in the policy.
  • Check that there are no errors and typos in the CASCO. This document is not valid if something has been crossed out or corrected in it. In case of even a minor error, the agent must fill out a new document correctly.

Remember that, in addition to the original CASCO policy, you must be issued a document confirming the payment of insurance premiums. As well as the rules of the insurance company.

In order not to get bogus insurance, carefully check the correctness of the information entered in the document. And also study the information about the insurance company you are contacting on the Internet. Such a check will not take much time, but will help protect yourself from buying a fake policy. The main thing is not to rush and not try to find a policy much cheaper than the average cost. After all, scammers appear in such situations.
